The 2026 Cheltenham Festival is officially underway at Prestbury Park, but a significant portion of the “Cheltenham Roar” has migrated 1,300 miles south to the Costa Blanca. In what has become a viral travel trend, thousands of British racing fans are opting for “BeniChelts”—watching the pinnacle of jump racing from the bars of Benidorm rather than the grandstands of Gloucestershire.

The Cost Comparison: Benidorm vs. Cheltenham
For many fans, the decision to head to Spain is a matter of simple mathematics. Rising costs for accommodation, transport, and tickets in the UK have made a Mediterranean holiday more affordable than a day at the track.
| Expense | Cheltenham Festival (Estimated) | Benidorm “BeniChelts” Trip |
| Entry Ticket | £50 – £115+ per day | Free (Watching in bars) |
| Pint of Beer | £7.50 (Reduced for 2026) | €2.00 – €4.00 (£1.60 – £3.30) |
| Accommodation | £300+ for 2 nights (booked early) | £200 (Includes flights & 3 nights hotel) |
| Daily Spend | £150+ | £40 – £60 |
According to travel retailer On the Beach, Benidorm has seen its biggest ever Cheltenham surge in 2026, with bookings for the week up 65% compared to last year and local hotels recording a 225% increase in race-week occupancy.
Why Fans are Making the Switch
1. Value for Money
Stephen Dahl, a regular in Benidorm since 2020, told BBC Sport that spending £150 a day at Cheltenham became impossible to justify. “We were having to stay further and further away… paying £60 for a taxi to a little village. In Benidorm, it’s half the price for twice the time.”
2. The Social Experience
For many, the Festival is a social event first and a sporting event second. Fans in Benidorm enjoy the sunshine, cheaper food, and a “laid-back” experience free of the 66,000-person crowds and long queues for the bathroom or the bar.
3. The “Hybrid” Fan
Some fans are trying both. Racing Lee, host of the Only Fools Love Horses podcast, is attending the first two days at Prestbury Park before flying to Spain for the Gold Cup on Friday. “The atmosphere at Cheltenham is like no other, but when things are half the price elsewhere, you’ve got to take the value!”

Cheltenham’s Fight Back: 2026 Changes
To combat the steady decline in attendance over the last three years, the Jockey Club has implemented several fan-focused changes for the 2026 meeting:
- Capacity Reduction: Daily attendance is capped at 66,000 (down from 68,500) to improve comfort.
- Pricing Relief: A pint of draught beer/cider has been reduced by 30p to £7.50.
- Restoring Tradition: The popular “Ladies’ Day” name has been restored to Day Two, replacing the “Style Wednesday” branding used in 2025.
Early signs are positive: 57,242 fans attended on Tuesday’s opening day, up from 55,498 in 2025.
