According to the U.K.’s Stratford-upon-Avon Herald, Nolan passed away on Saturday. Throughout a prolific career spanning nearly six decades, he became a familiar face on both the stage and screen, notably starring in two Batman films and the hit CBS series Person of Interest.

Collaborations with the Nolan Brothers

While he had a deeply established career of his own, modern audiences frequently recognized Nolan through his memorable appearances in the projects created by his nephews, Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan.

He appeared in four of Christopher Nolan’s feature films, including:

  • Following (1998): Playing the role of “The Policeman” in his nephew’s directorial debut.
  • Batman Begins (2005) & The Dark Knight Rises (2012): Portraying Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks.
  • Dunkirk (2017): Appearing in a poignant cameo as a blind man welcoming soldiers home.

On television, John Nolan starred in Jonathan Nolan’s highly successful CBS cyber-thriller series, Person of Interest. He took on the recurring role of former MI6 Agent John Greer, serving as a primary antagonist and appearing in 28 episodes spanning Seasons 2 through 5 (from 2013 to 2016).

A Prolific Screen and Stage Career

Born John Francis Nolan on May 22, 1938, in London, he was the younger brother of Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s father, Brendan Nolan.

In addition to his robust screen work—which featured more than 30 movies and TV series—Nolan was a highly respected veteran stage actor. He was a prominent member of the Royal Court Company and the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company. According to the Stratford-upon-Avon-Herald, Nolan also dedicated time to directing stage productions and teaching acting classes at Stratford College.

Nolan’s extensive screen credits trace back to the golden age of British television:

  • The Prisoner (1967): He made his screen debut in a bit part in Patrick McGoohan’s classic British spy series, The Prisoner.
  • Daniel Deronda (1970): His major breakthrough role came playing the title character in this BBC miniseries drama.
  • Doomwatch (1970–1971): A recurring role in the BBC’s classic sci-fi drama.
  • Crown Court (1977–1979): Guest roles on ITV’s popular courtroom drama.

Nolan’s final screen role came in 2024 when he appeared as the Speaker for the Hall in an episode of the HBO Max sci-fi series Dune: Prophecy.

Nolan is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, their two children, Miranda and Tom, and two grandchildren.
