His family released a heartfelt statement on Thursday afternoon. Consequently, fans around the world are mourning the loss of the beloved television star.

A Courageous Battle with ALS

Dane was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last year. This rare degenerative disease causes progressive muscle paralysis. Subsequently, patients slowly lose their ability to speak, walk, and breathe independently.

Following his diagnosis, Dane spent his final months raising awareness. He became a passionate advocate for the disease. Last summer, he spoke candidly on Good Morning America. During the interview, he admitted the diagnosis made him angry.

“My father was taken from me when I was young,” Dane explained. He added that he feared being taken from his own daughters while they were still very young. Furthermore, his father had died by suicide when the actor was just seven years old.

A Legendary Television Career

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane made his television debut in 1993 on The Wonder Years. However, he truly skyrocketed to global fame as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Later in his career, he captivated a new generation of audiences. He played the complex family patriarch Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria. Additionally, his television credits included roles as Jason Dean in Charmed and Captain Tom Chandler in The Last Ship.

His acting talent also extended to the big screen. For instance, he appeared in successful films such as Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque.

Final Days with Family

Despite his massive fame, Dane’s family was always the center of his world. He spent his final days surrounded by close friends and his devoted wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart. Together, they share two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always,” his family stated. Ultimately, they noted that Dane adored his fans and was forever grateful for their immense support.
