British welterweight star Conor Benn has officially parted ways with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. After a decade-long partnership, the 29-year-old has signed a lucrative deal with UFC President Dana White’s newly formed Zuffa Boxing promotion.
The unexpected move comes on the heels of Benn’s career-defining victory over long-time rival Chris Eubank Jr. last November. Consequently, this signing serves as a massive statement for Zuffa Boxing as it rapidly expands its global roster.
A Staggering Eight-Figure Deal
While official financial terms were not released by the promotion, reports indicate the contract is a one-fight, eight-figure deal. Industry sources suggest Benn will earn an estimated $15 million for his promotional debut.+1
Because it is a single-fight agreement, Benn will have the opportunity to test free agency immediately afterward. This unique structure provides him with life-changing money while keeping his long-term options entirely open. Dana White was equally enthusiastic about the acquisition. He praised Benn as an “absolute beast and a superstar” who is fully ready for a world title shot under the Zuffa banner.
Chasing the WBC Crown
Benn has made it clear that he moved to Zuffa to secure legacy fights and compete on the biggest stages. He recently moved down in weight and is now the mandatory challenger for the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight title.
Currently, that belt belongs to Mario Barrios. Coincidentally, Barrios is defending his championship against superstar Ryan Garcia tonight, February 21, in Las Vegas. Benn has explicitly stated his desire to fight the winner of that highly anticipated bout.+1
“I said I would be WBC champion, it was always the dream,” Benn stated. “I’ll be there ringside and I want the winner. No doubt it will be Garcia. Garcia vs. Benn—I like the sound of that.”
