Aston Villa have confirmed the loan signing of the Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho, as a summer of change continues at Villa Park.

The deal for Garnacho’s season-long loan includes a conditional obligation to buy a player who joined Chelsea last August from Manchester United in a deal worth £40m. Villa will be expected to pay a similar fee for the 22-year-old, who struggled to impress at Stamford Bridge despite featuring in 43 games in all competitions and scoring eight goals.

Garnacho has been allowed to depart Stamford Bridge after being informed he was not guaranteed regular playing time under the club’s new manager, Xabi Alonso. He did not report for duty when Chelsea players returned for pre-season, as arranged.

It was agreed he would stay away from the training ground while any departure was completed. Named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection, he missed out on this summer’s World Cup.

Unai Emery, Villa’s manager, said: “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are ‌really happy.”

Villa’s third signing of the summer, to follow the arrivals of Johan Manzambi and João Gomes, comes via a familiar trade route. The £117m deal that took Morgan Rogers to Stamford Bridge this week continued a run of transfers between the two clubs, incorporating Carney Chukwuemeka’s and Omari Kellyman’s sale to Chelsea in 2022 and 2024, Ian Maatsen heading in the reverse direction in 2024 and Axel Disasi’s brief 2025 loan to Villa.

Another former Chelsea charge, Jadon Sancho, spent last season on loan at Villa from United and, despite becoming a free agent, he was not signed. Youri Tielemans has also departed Villa for Manchester United this month after his £35m release clause was triggered as the Europa League champions rebuild as a Champions League club, though one under Uefa sanction.

Earlier this summer Villa received a partly suspended £19.4m fine by Uefa for a “significant breach” of the squad cost ratio rule for 2025. Depending on the club significantly decreasing their squad cost ratio in 2026, £12.9m is suspended, with the club restricted on the registration of new players on their squad list for the coming Champions League season.
