In a momentous announcement on BBC’s The One Show, it was revealed that Dame Elaine Paige will receive the prestigious Special Award at the 2026 Olivier Awards. The ceremony, which marks the 50th anniversary of the awards, will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
Often hailed as the “First Lady of the West End,” Paige’s career spans over six decades of theatrical excellence. Upon hearing the news, she expressed her gratitude, stating, “This is just so wonderful because I’m being given the award by the industry… my peers, so that’s what makes it really special.”

A Legendary Career in the Spotlight
Dame Elaine Paige—who received her Damehood in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours—is synonymous with some of the most iconic roles in musical theatre history. Her portfolio includes:
- Evita: Originating the title role of Eva Perón.
- Cats: Originating the role of Grizabella and the global hit “Memory.”
- Chess: Originating the role of Florence.
- Sunset Boulevard: A critically acclaimed turn as Norma Desmond.
Last year, Paige celebrated 60 years in show business with a sold-out milestone concert at the London Palladium.
Olivier Awards 2026: The 50th Anniversary Highlights
Hosted by Nick Mohammed, this year’s ceremony promises to be a historic celebration of British theatre. Several other early winners and leaders in nominations have already set the stage for the night:
- Outstanding Contribution to Dance: Awarded to choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor CBE.
- Outstanding Contribution to Opera: Awarded to soprano Danielle De Niese.
- Leading Nominations: Paddington The Musical (Savoy Theatre) and the revival of Into the Woods (Bridge Theatre) lead the pack with 11 nominations each.
- Industry Recognition: Honors will go to Betty Laine OBE, David Wood OBE, and National Theatre Stage Door Keeper Linda Tolhurst.
