Live radio is a high-wire act, and sometimes, the wire snaps. That is exactly what happened on Heart FM‘s Breakfast Show this Thursday when presenter Ashley Roberts made a cringe-worthy mix-up during a sensitive segment.

While intending to pay tribute to a recently deceased star, the former Pussycat Doll accidentally announced the death of Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke—who is very much alive and well.

Here is how the awkward moment unfolded.

The Mix-Up

During the entertainment news segment, Roberts prepared listeners for “sad news.” She then stated:

“Dawson’s Creek’s Dick Van Dyke has passed away.”

The studio fell into immediate confusion. Roberts had confused the 100-year-old Mary Poppins icon with James Van Der Beek, the Dawson’s Creek star whose death had been announced the previous evening.

The Immediate Correction

Her co-hosts, Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, were quick to jump in and stop the rumor mill before it started.

“Not Dick Van Dyke – come on,” Theakston interjected. “If you’re going to do a sensitive moment, if you’re going to do an obituary, you can’t just say Dick Van Dyke.”

Holden chimed in to clarify: “He’s alive.”

Realizing her mistake, a mortified Roberts quickly corrected herself. “Yes, [he’s alive] – he’s 100 years old! Oh my gosh, we spoke about this, I’m so sorry.”

The Real Tragedy: Remembering James Van Der Beek

The segment was meant to honor James Van Der Beek, who tragically passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the age of 48.

The actor, best known for playing Dawson Leery, died following a battle with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. Tributes have poured in from friends and co-stars, including Katie Holmes and Alfonso Ribeiro, who remembered him as a courageous and loving father of six.

Dick Van Dyke is Still Dancing

As for Dick Van Dyke, the screen legend is still with us. He celebrated his 100th birthday in December 2025 and continues to defy his age. He recently shared that he stays active with gym sessions three days a week.

While the on-air gaffe was unfortunate, it serves as a reminder that live broadcasting is unforgiving—especially when names sound vaguely similar.
