Rory McIlroy will not take part in the RBC Heritage this month. While taking a well-earned break after a major tournament victory is completely understandable, his decision to skip this exact event back in 2023 ended up costing him millions.

The 2023 Fine and PGA Tour Rules

The RBC Heritage, traditionally held the week after the Masters Tournament at Augusta National, is one of the most lucrative signature events on the calendar, boasting a massive $20 million (£14.8m) prize fund.

  • The 2023 Incident: After missing the cut at the Masters that year, McIlroy decided to skip the Heritage on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, to recalibrate. “It was an easy decision, but I felt like if that fine or whatever is to happen was worth that for me in order to get some things in place,” McIlroy said at the time.
  • The PIP Penalty: Under PGA Tour rules at the time, players ranked in the top 20 of the Player Impact Program (PIP) were strictly required to compete in all but one of the 17 designated signature events.
  • The Financial Blow: Because he had already skipped the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii earlier that year, McIlroy was forced to forfeit a massive share of his PIP bonus—amounting to a £2.2 million fine.

A Different Story in 2026

In 2024, the PGA Tour revised its rules to give top players greater flexibility. Instead of forcing participation under the threat of fines, officials boosted prize money in an effort to make signature events simply too lucrative to miss.

Thanks to this rule change, McIlroy can now sit out without financial penalty.

  • Back-to-Back Champion: McIlroy is skipping the Heritage this year to rest after successfully defending his title at Augusta on Sunday. He became just the fourth player in history to win back-to-back Masters.
  • A Nervy Finish: He finished at 12 under par, clearing Scottie Scheffler by a single stroke after his commanding six-shot advantage was whittled down to one heading into the final day.

“I can’t believe I waited 17 years to get one green jacket and I get two in a row,” an ecstatic McIlroy said after the tournament. “It was a tough weekend… But just so, so happy to hang in there and get the job done.”
