A massive global internet outage has knocked dozens of major websites offline. On Friday evening, internet infrastructure giant Cloudflare experienced severe network issues. Consequently, platforms used by millions of people became suddenly inaccessible.

Because Cloudflare provides critical security, performance, and routing services, its outages can disrupt huge portions of the internet at once.

High-Profile Platforms Affected

The disruption impacted a wide range of essential daily services. Major platforms including Uber, Workday, and Microsoft Outlook went down. Additionally, tracking platforms like Downdetector reported a massive spike in user complaints across other sites, including Bet365, Steam, and Wikipedia.

Users attempting to access these sites were met with frustrating error screens instead of the normal homepages.

The “403 Forbidden” Error

Cloudflare officially acknowledged the ongoing issues at 6:00 PM on Friday. According to the company, customers were seeing an unusually high number of “403 Forbidden” error messages.

Essentially, an HTTP 403 error means the website’s server is actively blocking access to the page rather than loading it normally. The problem also directly affected Cloudflare’s own 1.1.1.1 landing page. This specific page is what people see when they visit the company’s public Domain Name System (DNS) address in a browser.

Cloudflare’s Response and Investigation

Cloudflare runs an incredibly powerful network of servers spread across more than 330 cities in over 120 countries. These servers act as a crucial middle layer to help websites load faster, handle traffic smoothly, and stay secure against cyberattacks. When this system fails, the ripple effects are immediate.

“Cloudflare is investigating issues with our services and/or network,” the firm stated on its official system status page. “Users may experience errors or timeouts reaching Cloudflare’s network or services.”

Engineers are currently working to identify the root cause of the 403 errors and restore normal connectivity. The company promised to update its status page to clarify the scope of the impact as the investigation continues.
